Usually your local channels are unencrypted, but there is no guarantee. (i dont know if its supported by myth, it might be - i dont use myth so i dont follow what it supports). A popular model is the HDHomeRun with dual tuners that connects to the computer with ethernet.
To have any hope of receiving hdtv from cable you need a tuner that can handle unencrypted QAM. I'm also looking for specific recommendations for a good tuner card that works with MythTV, while I'm here, regardless of the status of my above questions. I'd like to run the cable straight from the wall into the tuner card, is it capable of reading those channels? Or would I need the HD cable box in between to get the HD channels? The HD content, I believe, is on channels much higher than 125. How exactly does the setup work for this? As far as I can tell, most TV tuners seem to advertise "125 channels". However, I realized that if I got an HD-capable tuner, I could pick up the HD channels on Comcast, since they don't charge extra and merely give you a different box to receive them. I don't really know anything about TV Tuners, my plan was to get the cheapest MythTV compatible card. So I'm looking at running MythTV on my yet-to-be-built new machine. I also have never used Comcast HD, but I am a Comcast customer (no HDTV). Preface: I don't know anything about TV Tuners (yet).
